Montmorillonite: The Active Mineral
Montmorillonite is a phyllosilicate mineral (Smectite group) with a 2:1 layered crystal structure. This creates a negatively charged surface with very high cation exchange capacity (CEC: 80-150 meq/100g).
Why this matters: The negatively charged layers attract water molecules and ammonium ions (from cat urine) through electrostatic forces — the physical basis for both clumping and odor control.
Performance Comparison
| Origin | Montmorillonite | Clumping Speed | Absorption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey (Ordu-Fatsa) | 85-95% | 2-5 sec | 300-320% |
| Other Turkish | 70-80% | 5-15 sec | 250-280% |
| China (sodium) | 60-75% | 10-30 sec | 200-250% |
