Marble Stairs — Steps, Risers & Balustrades - Technical Analysis

Marble Stairs – Grand Entrances & Architectural Statements

Marble staircases transform circulation spaces into architectural highlights. From monolithic treads with dramatic veining to intricate balustrade systems, natural stone stairs offer durability, slip resistance when correctly finished, and an unmatched sense of permanence and luxury.

A well-designed marble staircase adds significant property value. The combination of step geometry, stone selection, and balustrade design creates a signature feature that defines the entire interior. Our staircase packages include everything from the foundation tread to the final handrail.

Fabrication Details

Each tread is CNC-cut to precise dimensions with a 10–15 mm overhang on the riser. Exposed ends receive mitred returns for a finished look. Landings are bookmatched for symmetry. Balustrade panels are cut and polished to match the tread finish. Nosing profiles are consistent across all steps for safety compliance.

FAQ

Is marble slippery for stairs?
Polished marble can be slippery underfoot. We strongly recommend honed or flamed finishes for all treads. Additional anti-slip grooves or grit strips provide extra safety, especially for commercial or outdoor stairs.

Can marble stairs be installed outdoors?
Yes. Flamed or bush-hammered travertine and granite are ideal for external stairs. Ensure adequate drainage and frost-resistant stone. We recommend a minimum R11 slip rating for outdoor steps.

How long does marble staircase fabrication take?
Typically 3–6 weeks depending on the number of steps (10–30 steps), design complexity (straight vs. curved), and stone availability. Installation takes 1–2 weeks on site.

Do you supply matching risers and skirting?
Yes. All risers, stringers, skirting, and landings are supplied from the same slab batch to ensure consistent colour and veining across the entire staircase.

What is the load capacity of marble stair treads?
Solid marble treads (20 mm on a full concrete base) support standard residential loads. Cantilevered treads require 30 mm thickness and structural reinforcement. We provide engineering calculations for each project.

What is the typical cost range for a marble staircase?
Cost varies by stone type, number of steps, and design complexity. A straight 12-step staircase in Carrara marble costs significantly less than a curved 20-step staircase in Calacatta with custom balustrades. Contact us for a project-specific quote.
