Sunflower Oil Quality Specifications: GOST Standards, Grades, Price Benchmarks & Certification

Understanding sunflower oil quality specifications is the foundation of successful international trade. Every grade — from crude degummed to refined deodorized and high-oleic — carries distinct parameters that determine its application, shelf life, and market value. We supply all grades directly from Russian factories with full GOST R compliance, SGS-certified analysis, and a complete certification package for every shipment.

Sunflower Oil Grades Explained

Crude Sunflower Oil (CSO / CSFO)

Crude sunflower oil is unrefined oil extracted from sunflower seeds through mechanical pressing or solvent extraction. It contains free fatty acids, phospholipids, pigments, and waxes that must be removed through refining.

Refined Sunflower Oil (RSFO / RBD)

Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized (RBD) sunflower oil undergoes multi-stage refining to remove impurities, color, and odor. The result is a clear, neutral-tasting oil ready for direct human consumption.

GOST R Standards for Sunflower Oil

All Russian sunflower oil for export complies with GOST 1129-2013 — covering organoleptic properties, fatty acid composition, contaminant limits, pesticide residues (EU/Codex), and radioactive substances per SanPiN 2.3.2.1078-01.

How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)

The Certificate of Analysis is the single most important document in an edible oil transaction. Here is what each parameter means for the buyer:

CoA ParameterWhat It Tells YouWhy It Matters
Free Fatty Acids (FFA)Hydrolytic rancidity; seed qualityHigh FFA = lower refining yield, higher neutralization loss
Peroxide Value (PV)Primary oxidation; freshnessHigh PV = oxidizing; shorter shelf life
Anisidine Value (AV)Secondary oxidation (aldehydes)High AV = off-flavors already formed
TOTOXPV + 2×AV — total oxidationSingle freshness score. Lower is better.
Moisture & VolatilesWater contentExcess = microbial risk, hydrolysis
Color (Lovibond)Bleaching efficiencyHarder to bleach = higher refining cost
Cold TestWax content / winterizationFailure = oil clouds at room temp
Smoke PointThermal stabilityLow = unsuitable for frying
Phosphorus (PPM)Residual gumsHigh = degumming inefficiency
Fatty Acid ProfileAuthenticity fingerprintDeviations = adulteration (palm, soy)

What to check first: Start with FFA → TOTOX → Cold Test. If all three pass, the oil is almost certainly tradeable.

TOTOX Value: The Total Oxidation Indicator

TOTOX = 2 × Peroxide Value (PV) + Anisidine Value (AV) — the single best freshness score.

  • PV measures primary oxidation (fresh peroxides)

  • AV measures secondary oxidation (aldehydes from peroxide breakdown)

  • A low PV with a high AV means the oil has degraded during storage — a red flag PV alone misses
Industry-acceptable limits: RBD max 10 (premium), max 12 (acceptable food use); Crude max 15; HOSO max 8.

Laboratory Analysis Protocol (Протокол испытаний)

Our Russian factory partner provides an official laboratory analysis protocol (Протокол испытаний) for every production batch. This document — signed by the factory's accredited laboratory — includes full spectrometric analysis, fatty acid profile, and quality parameters.

Quality Testing Parameters Explained

Free Fatty Acids (FFA)

FFA is the most important quality indicator. High FFA indicates:

  • Poor quality or damaged seeds

  • Improper storage conditions

  • Hydrolytic rancidity
Acceptable levels: CSO < 1.5%, RSFO < 0.1%, HOSO < 0.1%

Peroxide Value (PV)

PV measures primary oxidation products (peroxides and hydroperoxides). High PV indicates:

  • Rancidity onset

  • Exposure to oxygen, light, or heat

  • Reduced shelf life
Acceptable levels: CSO < 10, RSFO < 4, HOSO < 3 meq/kg

Oxidative Stability (Rancimat)

Measures resistance to oxidation at elevated temperature. Higher values mean longer shelf life. HOSO (40+ hours) significantly outperforms standard sunflower oil (10–15 hours).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between crude and refined sunflower oil?

Crude sunflower oil is unrefined oil extracted directly from seeds. It contains free fatty acids, phospholipids, and pigments that require further processing. Refined sunflower oil has been bleached, deodorized, and winterized — it is clear, neutral-tasting, and ready for food use.

What does GOST 1129-2013 certification mean?

GOST 1129-2013 is the Russian federal standard for sunflower oil. It specifies quality parameters, test methods, packaging, labeling, and transportation requirements. Compliance is verified by accredited laboratories.

How does GOST compare to Codex Alimentarius?

GOST 1129-2013 is stricter than Codex on FFA (0.10% vs 0.15%), moisture (0.05% vs 0.10%), and color. Russian oil typically meets both standards, giving buyers flexibility for multiple markets.

What is a good TOTOX value for sunflower oil?

For refined RBD oil, TOTOX below 10 is premium; 10–12 is acceptable for most food use. Above 12 indicates degradation. Always check both PV and AV.

Do you provide SGS certification with every shipment?

Yes. Every shipment is inspected by SGS, Intertek, or a mutually agreed independent surveyor at the loading port. The certificate includes quantity, quality, and loading condition verification.

Can you supply sunflower oil with Halal certification?

Yes. Our Russian factory partners hold Halal certification from recognized bodies. Halal certificates are included with every shipment destined for Muslim-majority markets.

What is the shelf life of refined sunflower oil?

Properly sealed and stored refined sunflower oil has a shelf life of 18–24 months from production date. Storage temperature should not exceed 25°C, and the oil should be protected from direct sunlight.

What is the current market price for sunflower oil?

As of April 2026, the IMF PSUNOUSDM benchmark is ~$1,739/MT. FOB/CIF prices vary by destination, grade, and volume. Contact us for a firm CFR offer.
