Bioclimatic Pergola Systems: Scissor and Piston Louvre Roofs

Last updated:

A bioclimatic pergola is a motorised aluminium roof whose louvres rotate, or retract entirely, to control sun, shade, airflow and rain over a terrace. Closed, gasketed louvres shed water into hidden drainage; open, they ventilate. Two designs dominate: the scissor (rolling roof) and the piston-driven louvre system.

What a bioclimatic pergola is, and what it is not

The word "bioclimatic" describes the job rather than the shape. A normal pergola gives fixed, partial shade. A bioclimatic pergola gives you a roof you can change during the day: slats angled to block a low afternoon sun, tilted flat to keep rain off the tables, or opened wide to let hot air rise out of the space.

It is a building-envelope product, not garden furniture. The frame is extruded aluminium, the louvres are motor-driven, the roof is sealed and the water has a planned path to the ground. That is why it is priced and supplied as an engineered project, with dimensions, wind and snow conditions and anchoring all specified per site.

It is also not a fully enclosed room. With open sides it stays a covered outdoor space. Add zip screens or guillotine glass to the sides and you approach a four-season enclosure, but then local rules on enclosed floor area may apply.

How the louvres, seals and drainage work

The roof is made of aluminium louvres carried by a perimeter frame and beams. A motor, through a mechanism that depends on the model, turns the louvres together. In the closed position each louvre meets its neighbour at an EPDM rubber gasket, so the roof sheds rain instead of letting it through.

Water that lands on the roof runs into integrated channels in the beams and leaves through the posts. Nothing hangs on the outside of the structure, which is why the finished pergola looks clean. For the installer it means one post per drainage run must be positioned next to a gully or connection point before the floor is finished.

Open at partial angles, the same louvres work as a sun filter. Open at a steeper angle, they act as a ventilation stack: warm air escapes upward and cooler air enters from the sides. Our manufacturing partner in Türkiye builds the frame from 6063-T6 aluminium profiles with electrostatic powder coating and stainless fasteners, and offers in-channel 12V LED lighting.

Rain and wind sensing, remote control and apps

Automation is where a bioclimatic pergola earns its keep for operators. The motors can be driven from a hand remote, from wall controls or from a smartphone app, and the control unit can accept rain and wind sensors.

A rain sensor detects moisture and sends the closing command, so the roof is sealed before the first guests are wet. A wind sensor reads gusts and can retract or close the roof once the set limit is passed, which protects the mechanism more than the furniture. Thresholds are programmed at commissioning, and they should be agreed with the operator who has to live with them: a roof that shuts at every light shower annoys diners, one that waits too long risks damage.

Heaters, LED lighting and side screens can sit on the same control system, so a terrace can be switched from "lunch" to "evening" with one command. Smart-home integration is possible when the project needs it.

Scissor or piston: choosing the roof mechanism

The two systems answer different questions.

Scissor (rolling roof)Piston (louvred)
PrinciplePanels gather to one end and the roof opens fullyLouvres rotate 100°-115° on piston drive, no stacking

Both share the same aluminium profile family, motor options, wind test and snow reference, so the choice is about use, not quality tier. As a rule of thumb: choose scissor when guests should feel they are fully outdoors on a good day; choose piston when the priority is constant control of how much light and heat reach the seating.

Where bioclimatic pergolas are used

  • Restaurant and café terraces. The roof lets operators extend the season and keep tables usable in drizzle or strong sun. For the operator's view, including licensing and terrace layout, see our bioclimatic pergolas for HoReCa page; this overview covers the system itself.
  • Hotel gardens, pool decks and bars. Wide spans, lighting and remote control suit repeated multi-unit hotel projects.
  • Villas and residential terraces. Compact piston units beside a living room or pool.
  • Winter gardens. Combined with glass sides and a retractable roof, the space works in several seasons.
  • Commercial frontages and courtyards. Where a wide opening needs weather cover that can be opened.
Combined with zip screens and guillotine glass, the pergola becomes the roof of a weatherproof outdoor living room. Our terrace enclosure guide compares the side-closing options.

Options available on the system

  • 12V LED lighting inside the louvre channel, with RGB or dimmer control as an option.
  • Motors from established brands (Somfy, Mosel or Cuppon, 120 Nm class), with remote, sensors and app control.
  • Electric heaters mounted to the structure.
  • Zip screens or guillotine glass on one or more sides.
  • Optional polyurethane infill in scissor panels, specified when you request the quotation.
  • Powder-coat colour chosen per project.
  • Project-specific sizes, with structural calculation for your dimensions.

These are the values given for the standard systems; sites with heavier snow or wind exposure are reviewed in the project calculation.

Limits to plan around

A bioclimatic pergola is not a heat or noise barrier by itself, and it does not turn a terrace into a sealed room. Very long spans need intermediate beams or columns. Heavy snow regions need the structural check before the order, not after. And the roof still needs a floor or slab that can take the anchoring loads and a drainage connection near one post.

What to send with an enquiry

Approximate width and projection, the city or country of installation, the use (restaurant, hotel, villa) and any side closures wanted. Add whether the pergola leans on a wall or stands free. For prices, see our bioclimatic pergola price guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a bioclimatic pergola keep rain out?

In the closed position the louvres press against EPDM gaskets, and water runs into channels built into the beams and out through the posts. A rain sensor can close the roof automatically when moisture is detected.

Should I choose a scissor or a piston system?

Choose scissor if you want the roof to retract fully and give open sky. Choose piston if you want the louvres to rotate between 100° and 115° for precise shade and airflow, with the roof staying in place.

Can it be automated?

Yes. Remote controls, rain and wind sensors and smartphone app control are available, and LED lighting, heaters and zip screens can be added to the same system.

How large can one unit be?

A scissor module reaches 400 x 765 cm or 700 x 457 cm, a piston module 400 x 708 cm or 700 x 411 cm. Up to six modules can be joined for wider spans.

Which warranty applies?

The standard terms are five years on the motor and two years on the mechanical parts.
